Chapter 7

When the news broke that a bomb had exploded near the judiciary center, there was immediate panic. Two minutes later, the hospital was already receiving calls from the first responding units and getting ready to receive casualties.

Blair’s mind stopped functioning and then went into a downward spiral. Alex was scheduled to be in court that morning on a child custody case. As the news sunk in, her breathing became erratic, and her heart pounded in her chest. Lou, the senior emergency nurse approached her. “Are you okay, Reilley? You don’t look too good.” She heard her name, but she couldn’t respond. Her eyes were fixed on the TV screen.

Her heart was pounding so hard, she could feel her ears pop. Her thoughts were coming too fast and she couldn’t make any sense of what was going on. Alex! Where are you Alex? She pulled out her phone and immediately called. There was no answer. She redialed several times with the same result.

“Don’t know who you are trying to call, Dr. Reilley, but you won’t get through. They are saying that the cellular system is overloaded and calls are not getting through.” The words sounded like a blow to the head, as she still stared at the television screen.

First responders’ communications were frantic. The emergency room was in total disarray awaiting the ensuing chaos. All available surgeons and medical personnel were called in and everyone was rushing to prepare all the necessary equipment. The hospital was still preparing when the casualties began to arrive.

It was all happening too quick. There was barely time to think. The victims were being rolled in and the emergency room soon became a gruesome scene. First responders pushed gurneys as directed by the nurses, doctors ran to groups of paramedics and other medical personnel who were trying to triage victims. There were burn victims, mutilated bodies, missing limbs and innumerable other types of injuries. The emergency room looked like a bomb had exploded right there.

Blair was going through the motions, but her mental state of confusion did not allow her think or much less be efficient. The normally calm surgeon was in an internal state of panic. Alex was the only thing on her mind. She couldn’t even think of what was going on around her, or of all the people needing medical attention around her. She walked out of the emergency room and into the reception area like a zombie only thinking of Alex.

“Dr. Thompson, something’s wrong with Reilley.” One of the nurses told him as she ran by him. Blair was paralyzed looking at the TV screen in the reception area. Thompson was the head of the trauma unit. “Reilley, what the hell are you doing just standing there?”

She responded absent-minded. “My partner was in the courthouse today. I can’t reach—.” He knew what she was about to say. “She’s probably fine. Get busy, there’s work to do. We need someone outside to do triage.” He was immediately called away and said nothing else.
